Does the White House and Congress Care What Americans think?

In a CBS News Poll conducted October 18-21, 2013, Americans responded and gave the White House and Congress some feedback on their performance relating to the handling of the recent government shutdown, budget crisis, and debt ceiling. The following are some of the responses from this poll:
• 86% are dissatisfied with Washington DC politics,
• 85% disapprove of the job Congress is doing,
• 49% disapprove of the job President Obama is doing,
• 49% said that the President did not show strong leadership on the budget and debt crises,
• 78% said that John Boehner, Speaker of the House did not show strong leadership on these crises,
• 76% said that Harry Reid, Senate Majority Leader did not show strong leadership on these crises,
• 80% believe that the US political system is not working due to infighting and gridlock,
• 76% feel that they don’t have much of a say in what the government does,
• On the shutdown, 46% of Americans blame Republicans in Congress compared to Obama and Democrats at 35% while 14% blame both,
• 75% responded that the health care law should not have been part of the negotiations on the budget and debt ceiling,
• Americans replied that when negotiating the budget and debt ceiling, 71% of Republicans were more concerned with gaining political advantage compared to 24% for doing what was right for the country, while 55% of Democrats were more concerned with gaining political advantage compared to 42% who wanted to do what was right for this country.
These responses reflect a citizenry that is very dissatisfied with both the White House and Congress for the lack of any real effort to sit down together and deal with a growing number of national level issues, beginning with producing a budget and raising the debt limit. The lack of any real leadership on both sides is embarrassing and it threatens to undermine our system of government. This is especially true with the last response which indicates that 71% of Republicans and 55% of Democrats are more concerned about gaining political advantage over the other than doing what is right for this country. This is a blow to each of us as United States citizens and for our form of government. It’s time that the self-centered politicians in Washington take a hard look in the mirror and see the barren legacy they are leaving for our descendants.
Paul Okum has 40 years’ experience with the Federal Government in the Departments of Transportation, Interior, Army, and Defense in leadership positions, including being a US Army officer.
